Glossary of Terms
Custom Keyboard: A computer keyboard with a unique, individually tailored key set consisting of custom printed legends and could also have color-coded keys.
Double Shot Molded Keys: This is a process where by the replacement keys have the legend molded (in plastic) and pieced together as one-piece keys. This is the most expensive process, but best for wear. This process is used mostly for customers who have heavy use on keyboards.
Epoxy Printing: Epoxy printing is a process where by the epoxy-based ink is printed on the surface of the keycap. After the legend is printed on the keycap, the ink is left to cure for a 24-hour period. Then a UV clear coat is applied over the legend. The UV clear coat protects the printed legend from wear and tear.
Re-legendable keys: These are clear keycaps that have two pieces. The top piece of the key is removable, which allows a die cut paper with the printed command to be inserted between the 2 pieces of the keycap. If the function of the key changes often, all that is needed is a new die-cut piece of paper printed with the new legend.
Key Set: the complete set of custom printed keys needed for adapting a standard keyboard to meet the needs of a specific application also referred to as a key kit. Key sets are provided to customers who do not need new keyboards but need to have their existing keyboards modified to match with their applications.
Key Top/Key Front: top horizontal surface of the key and the front vertical face of the key. The top is traditionally used for printing on the keycap and if needed the front face of the keycap can also be printed on.
Keyboard Cover: A flexible protective cover placed over keyboard keys to prevent damage from liquid spills or other foreign matter from getting under the keys.
Keycap: the pushbuttons on a keyboard also referred to as keytop, keyboard key, computer key, or just key. Keycaps can be customized using various colors and legends.
Keycap Label: a printed die cut label that covers the top of an existing key. Can be used to customize a keyboard or renew a keyboard that has worn off legends.
Legend: the character or symbol printed on a keycap.
POS Keyboards: Point-of-Sale (POS) Keyboards are used in retail stores and restaurants with custom printed legends that have the names of items to be purchased.
